Pharmaceutical Application of Phyto-Polymers& its Derivatives in Pharmaceutical Industries; A case study of Cellulose and its derivatives

Muhammad Masood Ahmad, Muhammad Mustafa Abeer.

Abstract
Cellulose, a phyto-polymer,has established value due to their benefits related to its physiochemical properties for pharmaceutical applications. Both cellulose and derivative polymers have potential for development of novel pharmaceutical preparations. These polymers are used for their coating, film-forming, sustained release, swelling, pH-sensitivity, osmotic, filler, and disintegrant properties. They are also used for modulating viscosity, solubility, and biodegradability features of pharmaceuticals.Polymeric cellulose nanoparticles, nanotubes and nanocrystals have also been used for various drug delivery applications. The cellulose-based polymers are used for targeting therapeutics at desired site of action by applying the so-called concept of magic bullets. Cellulose-based polymersare also known to overcome undesirable physicochemical properties of encapsulated molecules and improve the pharmacokinetics by increasing bioavailability. The production of the cellulose-based polymers is commercially viable and has considerably increased recently. In this review, we emphasize the wide use of cellulose-based polymers and discuss distinctive characteristics of the polymer applicable in stable and effective pharmaceutical dosage form design.

Key words: KEYWORDS: Phyto-Polymers (Cellulose base polymer), Hemicellulose polymer, Novel pharmaceutical product, Drug delivery system (Sustain Release).
